The Laundry Machine Operator position is located in the Environmental Management Service and reports to the Laundry Work Leader/Laundry Supervisor. This position is responsible for the operation of commercial type washers, extractors, tumblers, conditioners and machines used for the sorting, washing, drying, pressing and inspecting of linens and other articles.

Duties

Operates commercial-type laundry washers, extractors, tumblers or conditioners. Uses standard procedures to set timers by type of load for one or more combinations of laundry machines; set timers per weight of loads and balances loads by distributing loads evenly. Operates and controls machines for sorting, ironing and folding. Maintains work area and equipment to sanitary standards. Uses, moves and controls heavy equipment; carries and sets up ladders; and works from ladders. Performs janitorial duties to include sweeping, mopping, washing windows/walls, clean furniture/fixtures and emptying waste cans. Works according to set procedures for loading machines, timing of machine load and maintaining production schedules. Ensures extractor loads are evenly balanced to avoid too much vibration, or that tumblers are proper to permit drying within the time allowed. Loads laundry into laundry machines; follows set procedures to control machines. Follows set procedures to control machines. Ensures instructions are followed and items that require rewashing are called to the attention of the Laundry Work Leader. Makes minor repairs on textiles with the hot pot machine. Sorts, washes, dries, presses linens and other articles. Constructs and/or repairs clothing and materials made of fabrics. Reports the need for equipment maintenance. Keeps work area clean. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/16/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The incumbent will be required to have strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods of time. This could include pulling wet laundry form washer, pushing heavy carts, and lifting bundles weighing over 50 pounds. Stands and walks continuously on concrete floors. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside a laundry facility with higher than normal temperatures, high humidity and prolonged exposure to loud noises. The incumbent is exposed to possible injury from high pressure steam, and fast moving machinery. The employee can be continually exposed to the possibilities of bruises from moving carts or falls on wet floors in the washing area.
