Duties

Serve as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property where large quantities of fuel products are stored. Combat fires at fuel storage areas utilizing a current knowledge of the types of fuel stored, the characteristics of the tanks, the characteristics of the different fuels and the specialized firefighting and rescue techniques. Respond to alarms and combat fires requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks. Alternate as hoseman, nozzleman, ladderman, hydrantman, rescueman, salvageman, and hand lineman. Serve as a fully trained member of a crash rescue crew engaged in the protection of life and property from crashed and burning aircraft. Serve as driver-operator of one or more types of major motorized firefighting equipment, including but not limited to, pumpers, aerials, and AARF vehicles under all types of conditions. Administer emergency care and treatment for illnesses and injuries of occupational and non-occupational origin for soldiers, dependents, government employees and visitors. Perform alarm room watch on a rotating basis, which includes monitoring fire and rescue radios, automatic alarms, emergency and administrative phone lines and equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a drug pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the employee to work 72 hours a week (144 hours per pay period), which includes weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) experience as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property responding to fires 2) experience using firefighting and rescue techniques, equipment and extinguishing agents; 3) experience with contaminated and/or hazardous areas requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks including building ventilation, fire extinguishing, and 4) experience performing emergency medical service(s) (EMS).This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-6). SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications: (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application): - Firefighter I - Firefighter II - Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Operations level - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification at the Basic or higher level issued by the State of Virginia or National Registry.
