About the Position: Library Technician performs a wide variety of tasks in support of information services at Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library. Serves as a library technician providing a full range of circulation, reader, and reference services. Fort Leavenworth is the oldest continuously active military reservation west of the Mississippi River. This historic post is noted for the campus-like setting, open green spaces and hometown character.
Duties
Uses personal computer, word processing, and/or other office automation equipment and various software programs to create, copy, edit, store, retrieve, and print a variety of documents.
Maintains statistics, including statistics for customer assistance and services.
Produces correspondence, memoranda, reports, forms, creates or maintains spreadsheets or databases.
Pushes loaded book carts to shelve a variety of printed items including books, journals, microfiche, and audio-visual materials.
Maintains appearance, functionality, and proper order of the collection by regularly conducting shelf maintenance and shelf reading in
accordance with library standards and best practices.
Checks out, checks in, places holds, renews library materials for patrons’ overdue materials, damaged, and lost library materials.
Assists clientele in the use of library resources by showing users how to find items in the public access catalog, periodical index, electronic
storage files, and other finding aids.
Independently resolves problems with patron registration, overdue materials, damaged, and lost library materials.
Answers telephone calls and patron inquiries about library hours, policies, services, and the availability of library materials.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
- Must be able to work irregular hours of duty, to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Incumbent may be required to work overtime.
- Position requires lifting up to 45lbs and pushing up to 50lbs.
- The position requires a pre-employment physical and an annual physical after appointment.
- Incumbent must be a qualified typist.

Specialized Experience for the GS-5: One year of specialized experience which 1) Assists clientele in the use of library resources by showing users how to find items in the public access catalog, periodical index, electronic storage files, and other finding aids; and 2) Checks out, checks in, places holds, renews library materials for patrons; and 3) Produces correspondence, memoranda, reports, forms, creates or maintains spreadsheets or databases; and 4) Pushes loaded book carts to shelve a variety of printed items including books, journals, microfiche, and audio-visual materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
