The primary purpose of this position is to To independently perform a wide range of material handling and heavy capacity fork lift operating duties for Air Mobility (AMC) strategic Aerial Port Squadrons, supporting the United States Transportation Command's global cargo movement requirements.
Duties
- Independently performs a wide range of warehousing duties, to include receiving, storing, issuing, shipping, pickup, and delivery of general, oversized, or specialized bulk materials and equipment. Verifies quantities received with receiving reports and takes appropriate action to resolve disparities. Groups items together based on receiving documents/information and segregates items according to factors such as condition and type of commodities. Selects and assembles items for issuance/shipment based on priority, type of material, onward mode of transportation, and destination.
Segregates and moves material to holding area or dock and verifies item identification on request forms. Loads/unloads modal conveyances (i.e. trucks) and inputs shipment information into existing operating systems. Uses computer terminals, optical readers, bar code wands, scanners, etc. to input nomenclature and description of changes. Enters or retrieves data via a computer terminal into or from an automated warehouse record system. Processes material received without documentation by obtaining and inputting required information into automated system. Builds pallet loads to facilitate storage and transports materials to storage area. Obtains required signatures on appropriate paperwork before shipping/issuing items as required.
- Operates electric, gasoline, LPG, or diesel powered fork lift trucks capable of lifting loads weighing up to 50K pounds higher than 168 inches and automated material handling/ identification equipment to include mobile stock selectors and electromechanical automated equipment, such as high rise automated storage and retrieval vehicles to move, stack and unstack, load and unload, bin, and position materials, supplies and equipment. Operates fork lift truck controls to transport oversized equipment and bulky, unwieldy items such as steel beams, sheet metal, and bar stock requiring special consideration for load balance. Maneuvers fork lift over various types of terrain (in and outdoors) and through narrow aisles within storage areas of the aerial port complex. Maneuvers vehicles to load and off-load flatbed trailers comprised of oversize/outsize cargo (extremely large, heavy, and bulky items) to include rolling stock items. Provides adequate protection for fragile or high value items. Completes required warehousing forms and obtains needed signatures. Performs routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on equipment and/or vehicle(s) to ensure proper operation and readiness for future use. Inventories and inspects equipment and/or vehicle(s) on a regular basis and reports discrepancies.
- Secures hazardous, and non-hazardous cargo prior to shipment. Complies with safety and security regulations and follows specialized preservation, handling, and storage procedures when securing and protecting hazardous or specialty cargo such as munitions, explosives and toxic materials. Adheres to transportation protective service procedures when preparing cargo for shipment. Responsible for securing cargo inside or on pallets/conveyances which have regular rectangular shapes and/or unobstructed cargo areas in/on box cars, gondolas, flat cars, vans and/or stake bed trucks. Constructs and securely installs blocks, wedges, gates, braces and other staying devices to separate and secure crated/boxed items inside or upon said conveyances. Uses tie downs, guys, blocks, cables, chains, ropes, wires, chocks, cleats, pneumatic dunnage, axle braces, turnbuckles and/or clamps to accomplish a secure blocking and bracing of items on/in the asset/conveyance.
- Drives one or more types of trucks such as pickup, panel, and flatbed trucks, which typically have a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less, on public roads at highway speeds. Picks up and delivers items to/from base customers as required to support shipping & receiving activities. Ensures cargo is protected from the weather and that is properly distributed and secured to prevent damage or loss while in transit. Maintains vehicle(s) used to ensure proper operation and readiness for future use. Performs routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on vehicle(s). Checks routine items on the vehicle checklist (such as oil, tire pressure, windshield washer fluids, power steering fluids, gas, etc.). Inventories and inspects vehicle(s) on a regular basis and reports discrepancies.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures, complies with established safety rules and regulations, and maintains a safe, clean, and secure work environment. Operates tools, equipment and vehicles in accordance with safety regulations. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Follows federal and state rules when storing, using, handling, labeling, and disposing of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental standards. Safeguards material, items, and equipment by remaining alert and challenging unauthorized personnel.

- This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use
- This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations
- Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the 6907 - Materials Handler family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a MATERIALS HANDLER (FORK LIFT/MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR) without more than normal supervision
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of accepted warehousing methods, procedures, and material handling techniques; sufficient to receive, store, issue, ship, pickup, deliver, preserve and account for general, oversized, or specialized bulk materials and equipment.
2. Knowledge and skill to safely operate one or more electric, gasoline, diesel, or LPG powered fork lift trucks with a capacity of up to 50,000 pounds, sufficient to handle controls for starting, stopping, backing, lifting, lowering, and tilting; the ability to maneuver bulky material both inside and outside in rough or muddy terrain and in places where there is little room to stack or maneuver, and the ability to accurately gauge height, length, width, and weight of a load and determine proper warehousing/storage location.
3. Knowledge of transportation policies and procedures and safety rules and regulations.
4. Skill in the use of automated material processing equipment and systems to include computer terminals, optical readers and scanners.
5. Ability to adhere to transportation protective service procedures and follow specialized preservation, handling, and storage procedures when securing and protecting hazardous or specialty cargo such as munitions, explosives and toxic materials.
6. Ability to safely drive and operate a motor vehicle sufficient to manipulate controls for starting, stopping, backing, and driving vehicles in all types of traffic and road conditions and in judging overhead, side clearance, turning radius, and braking distance.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
