This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The incumbent is responsible, along with other members of the archival staff, for planning, performing and monitoring all archival functions in a variety of media, establishing work priorities, and ensuring that priorities and work assigned to the archival staff are completed in compliance with NARA policies, standards, and procedures.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an ARCHIVIST, you will:
Work independently in identifying, arranging and reviewing both non-classified and national security classified presidential records in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Independently provide reference service in response to regular and complex e-mail, phone, and written requests for information regarding the Library's textual, electronic, and non-textual holdings.
Plan and direct the arrangement of presidential records, federal records, and donated materials. Oversee the creation of parallel files for records available to research as the result of FOIA requests.
Assess researcher and archival needs and determine priorities for developing finding aids for records processed systematically and records processed in response to FOIA requests.
Apply preservation techniques and recommend strategies for textual records, electronic records, and audiovisual materials. Identify preservation needs and researches new approaches to preservation problems.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience: For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes:
Performing archival functions, such as; monitoring, pulling and refiling archival records, reference and research room work, arrangement and description, holdings maintenance and/or digitization of records;
AND
Experience communicating and assisting with various audiences.
OR
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement;
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the basic education requirement (i.e., beyond Bachelor's degree) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.

Individual Occupational Requirement
Basic requirements for all grades:
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
