You will serve as a SAFETY & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST in the OCCUPATIONAL, SAFETY, HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICE of NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL.

Duties

You will advise managers, supervisors, and employees of appropriate safety and occupational health measures to control or eliminate hazards. You will advise organizational leadership in the development of solutions for confronting irregular safety challenges. You will develop safety and occupational health reports that identify and explain causal factors. You will analyze safety and occupational health policies or procedures to identify deficiencies or recommend improvement to work processes.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Work requires regular and recurrent physical exertion related to frequent inspections and surveys requiring standing, walking, climbing, bending, and reaching. Will be occasionally required to lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Work may require some level of physical dexterity when completing work assignments at some of the inspection site.
  • Work requires regular and repetitive exposure to hazards such as high level noises, adverse weather conditions, fuel and other chemicals, moving machinery, laboratory and radiological processes.

Qualifications

GS-11 Applicants: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Participating on survey and inspection teams while applying techniques and measures used to identify safety hazards; 2) Conducting independent safety inspections of complex workspaces, evaluating hazards, and establishing risk potential; 3) Investigating mishaps, analyzing accident and injury reports, and evaluating data for trends and causes of mishaps, to develop recommendations for mitigating safety hazards; 4) Drafting and revising safety instructions, standard operating procedures, and work processes; and 5) Instructing leadership and employees on varying standards, general safety and occupational health objectives, mishap prevention, and safe working practices. GS-09 Applicants: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: : 1) Supporting survey and inspection teams while assisting in applying techniques and measures used to identify safety hazards; 2) Assisting in conducting safety inspections of workspaces and helping to identify hazards and risk potential; 3) Providing support with performing mishap investigations and recommending techniques to mitigate safety hazards; 4) Assisting with drafting and revising safety instructions, standard operating procedures, and work processes; and 5) Supporting employees on varying standards, general safety and occupational health objectives, mishap prevention, and safe working practices. GS-11 Applicants:
  • Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology, OR
  • Successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology, OR

  • Successfully completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology, OR
