The position is located in the Business Office Services, Patient Registration Section at the Standing Rock Service Unit, McLaughlin H.C. The Incumbent serves as Medical Support Assistant and works in various clinical settings (that is; Ambulatory Care, Emergency Unit, Inpatient Unit A/P/O B, Bullhead and Wakpala satellite clinic on a rotation basis and provides assistance in determining eligibility for direct care services and obtaining registration (demographic and third party) information.
Duties
Interviews patients in person or on the phone to obtain pertinent patient registration information, i.e., demographic and insurance information and authorization to enable the Business Office to bill for health care services provided from all alternate resources, including
the non-beneficiary services. Schedules appointments as needed.
Obtains signatures for file on required forms for Alternate Resources and Contract Health Services for billing purposes and/or Contract Health Services prior to patients being seen in the clinics.
Collects third party recipient health cards, obtains photocopies of the card and explains the program to the beneficiaries, i.e., why Medicare, Medicaid, and/or private/commercial insurance will be billed for the services received at the IHS facility.
Initiates all admitting forms to complete the admission with current patient data, including the RPMS Patient Registration System upon direction or as the need arises.
Serve as liaison to providers and recipients.
This work is mostly sedentary, with some walking, standing and bending while interviewing patients and preparing the appropriate paperwork for treatment of a patient or initiating a chart.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-3: six months of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to perform the work of this position at the GS-3 level.
OR
I have 1 year of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify an applicant for the GS-3 level.
GS-4: One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to perform the work of this position at the GS-4 level.
OR
have 2 years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
I have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualification s for this position. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify an applicant for the GS-4 level.
GS-5: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples include: Determining eligibility by verifying whether documented proof offered meets the requirements for new patients seeking facility services. Obtaining and processing demographic and insurance information for patient registration, alternate resources, contract health services or related purposes; interviews patients to obtain pertinent registration information; maintaining an appointment system by computer and/or appointment book; assisting staff in preparing patient transfer paperwork.
OR
I have 4 years of education above the high school level.
OR
I have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-05 grade level.
GS-6: one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-OS grade level that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples include: Determining eligibility by verifying whether documented proof offered meets the requirements for new patients seeking facility services. Interviewing techniques to assists patients in completing new or updated forms, Business Office functions, understanding policies and procedures and refer inquiries to appropriate personnel. Experience working with Electronic Health Record or similar systems; update pertinent patient information, key updated information into patient files, scanning and filing patient documents.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
