Duties

SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to provide a Lead Education Technician directing the work of 3 or more lower graded technicians within the organization. Serves as an Admissions Counselor processing applications for admission to the Air Force Academy, the Falcon Foundation, and the Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Also performs duties as an Admissions Reader, evaluating candidate files and makes recommendations in support of the enrollment of outstanding candidates who have the attributes to succeed as a cadet in the academy. DUTIES: Leads three or more Education Technicians (GS-07 or military equivalent) assigned to the branch within the Selections Division. Processes new and updated applications, candidate kits, and notify applicants and candidates of their admissions status. Uses practical knowledge of best College admissions practices, educational theories, principles, procedures, academic/social histories, educational transcripts, and other non-academic requirements to evaluate pre-candidates, candidates, and appointees to the United States Air Force Academy. Conducts personal and telephonic counseling and responds to inquiries on behalf of the candidate.

  • Due to unusual circumstance (i.e. severe weather, base closures) may have to telework.
  • Employee may occasionally be recalled to duty or required to work extended hours, weekends, or holidays. Overtime may be required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions, GS-1702, Education and Training Technician Series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of an extensive body of rules, concepts, techniques, procedures, and operations of a formal education system application and selection processes for the admission of cadets. Knowledge of the organization's operations and functions sufficient to evaluate information gathered from various sources and use basic analytical methods and techniques to determine adequacy of, or deficiencies in the admissions and selections function. Knowledge of the education program mission and objectives to perform assignments and resolve a wide range of issues using accepted practices. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in­-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-08 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the rules, procedures, policies, and programs related to employee education program admissions, administration, and records management to collect, update, assess, and maintain information. Ability to review and assess high school transcripts, college transcripts, physical fitness tests, medical qualifications, and extracurricular activities. Knowledge of the organization's operations and functions sufficient to utilize well-established procedures and techniques to perform the routine, procedural work of the office, such as processing admissions packages, providing candidate information and counseling, and maintaining records. Knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to support office operations, retrieve and input data; a qualified typist is not required. Skill in locating, assembling, and compiling information for routine inquiries and/or reports. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using tact and courtesy. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the function as a senior technician; and mentor, motivate, and lead others on the technical aspects of the work performed. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
