About the Position: You will serve as a Hazardous Waste Disposer (Forklift Operator) with the Directorate of Public Works at Yakima Training Center, Yakima, Washington.

Duties

Collect hazardous waste in preparation for disposal. Maintain Safety Data Sheets to ensure compliance with regulations. Operate a forklift used for transporting waste containers/drums. Perform inventory checks on hazardous waste material.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The position requires initial and annual physical examination.
  • Duties of the position require use of a forklift. Training and certification provided once employee is on the job.
  • This is a Mission Essential position.
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Incumbent required to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds, and use handling equipment or assistance to lift heavier items.
  • Incumbent must wear personal protective gear as directed, including a respirator.
  • Handling of Hazardous Waste Certifications/training is provided after selection.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Hazardous Waste Disposer (Forklift Operator)~ without more than normal supervision, to include identifying hazardous waste/material in accordance with applicable environmental regulations, Federal and/or state guidelines; ensuring all drums/containers are marked/labeled as to contents; and ensuring all required documentation is attached to drums/containers for transportation. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading)Dexterity and SafetyKnowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)Work Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) Work regularly requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing and working in uncomfortable positions in the storage area and at waste/spill sites. Lifts and moves items weighing up to 50 pounds, and uses handling equipment or assistance to lift heavier items. Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Is exposed to the possibility of asphyxiation and chemical burns from toxic fumes and spills of waste materials. Is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, broken bones, sprains, falls, etc. during on-site work and inspections or when loading or unloading vehicle. Must wear personal protective gear as directed, including a respirator. Work is dirty, dusty, and greasy. Incumbent is exposed to all types of traffic where there is possibility of serious accidents.
