The primary purpose of this position is: This is a developmental position with known promotion potential to the target position of Environmental Health Technician, GS 0698-09. Incumbent works closely with supervisor in performing duties identified in full performance personnel document.

The primary purpose of this position is: To investigate and analyze a variety of problems and/ or conditions in the workplace which may adversely affect the health of workers, the public, or the environment, making recommendations to control and/or eliminate these environmental and health hazards. Implements various base programs, providing support to work centers through surveys, evaluations, and training.
Duties:
Plans, organizes and manages the installation Public Health Surveillance Program and provides support to the Industrial Hygiene program.
Performs inspection of food establishments, distributors, and storage facilities and ensures food safety and food handling and preparation.
Provides Occupational Health Program training for Traditional Reservist, Air Reserve Technicians and active duty personnel.
Performs Emergency Management and Response functions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least (1) one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05 (or higher) or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience includes experience that involved identifying, preventing, or eliminating health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control and eradication methods, and may have been gained in work such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full year of graduate level education. This education was obtained in an accredited college or university and my education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of an Environmental Health Technician. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07 (or higher), or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes experience that involved identifying, preventing, or eliminating health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control and eradication methods, and may have been gained in work such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker. Specialized experience includes ensuring food storage, preparation and serving procedures do not compromise the wholesomeness of products; conducting inspections of temporary living quarter of base lodging facilities; and performing routine visits to work areas to gather information on work areas to include personal protective equipment, personnel roster and job descriptions.

Examples of specialized experience includes experience that involved identifying, preventing, or eliminating health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control and eradication methods, and may have been gained in work such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker. Specialized experience includes performing no notice, spot and special inspections of industrial facilities and shops, when new equipment is installed and when potential hazardous conditions exist. Performing surveillance inspections of stored subsistence and food service facilities, provide technical leadership and guidance to Food Service Managers on food storage and food service facility sanitation. Evaluating water supplies, waste disposal, insect and rodent control, and other environmental factors that determine acceptability of establishments supplying food for consumption.

1. Knowledge of environmental health concepts, principles, methods and techniques, including survey and inspection techniques and control and eradication methods.
2. Knowledge of analysis, evaluation, fact-finding, and investigative techniques in order to gather data, identify significant factors, and recommend a solution from a number of possible alternatives.
3. Practical knowledge of industrial hygiene and occupational health concepts, principles, methods and practices.
4. Knowledge of laws and regulations regulating governmental environmental health practices.
5. Knowledge of Hazardous Material Response as it relates to Public Health and Bioenvironmental Engineering.
6. Skill in applying standard training techniques, methods, and materials sufficient to develop and present training and instructional sessions.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
