This position is in the United States Mint, Protection Directorate in the Security Division. The Security Division protects monetary and bullion assets while in the custody and control of the United States Mint during production, storage, transportation, or other use. Protects all facility space, property, employees, and other persons entering agency premises, develops security policies and programs.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
Design, develop, evaluate, and install protection systems and devices to ensure that sensitive information, equipment, and other material is not compromised, sabotaged, stolen, misused, or subjected to malicious mischief or other acts of willful interference.
Ascertain the use of materials in the United States Mint, who is to use it, and how it is to be protected. Evaluate the effectiveness of existing security practices, recommends the type of control requirements, procedures, and facilities needed. Ensure staff adheres to established policy, practices, and recommends appropriate action to correct deficiencies.
Determine the number and kinds of safes, alarms, locks, fences, and markings required. Lay out restricted and controlled areas and sets up personnel circulation control and entry systems and develops procedures for the movement and handling of sensitive material.
Be responsible for performing the duties outlined in his or her elements and standards to the best of his or her abilities; promptly notifying supervisors about factors that interfere with his her ability to perform his her duties at the level of performance required by his her performance elements and standards; seeking opportunities to improve his her performance through training and development; and, promoting team accomplishments by supporting team goals and objective.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Specialized Experience:
For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility at the GS-11 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which have equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position includes experience performing physical security administration work that involves, on own initiative, providing guidance and recommendations regarding access control systems, policies, programs, and training in order to safeguard personnel, facilities, materials, and documents.
Examples of such experience could include:
- Working with alarm systems, CCTV controls, access control methods and emergency response procedures; OR
- Conducting physical security surveys and assessments, and making recommendations from these; OR
- Investigating security problems and developing alternative solutions; OR
- Researching and analyzing physical security techniques, identifying problems, gathering information and developing and implementing plans and solutions; OR
- Drafting and presenting physical security procedures and policies.
For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility at the GS-09 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which have equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position Specialized experience for this position includes experience performing physical security work, with clear precedents and under limited supervision, involving the application of security programs and policies in order to safeguard personnel, facilities, materials, and documents.
Examples of such experience could include:
- Working with alarm systems, CCTV controls, access control methods and emergency response procedures; OR
- Conducting physical security surveys and assessments; OR
- Assisting with investigating security problems and developing alternative solutions; OR
- Assisting with researching and analyzing physical security techniques, identifying problems, gathering information and developing and implementing plans and solutions; OR
- Assisting with the presentation of physical security procedures and policies.
OR
You may substitute education for general or specialized experience as follows:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
or
3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree
or
LL.M., if related.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility at the GS-07 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which have equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position includes experience performing security work independently performing security surveys or coordinating with other members of the team regarding cost-benefit relationships for security devices or equipment systems, and similar considerations.
Examples of such experience could include:
-Applying risk assessment methods, threat assessment principles and physical security practices in order to Inspecting facilities where security processes and methods are known to the employee, security programs are operated effectively, and there is no history of significant violations and deficiencies and make recommendations OR
Collecting information, interviewing workers, observing physical conditions and related activities concerned with violations and compromises. OR
- Experience using security policies, procedures, priorities and program plans to assist a team to plan, evaluate and develop physical security program components for the protection of resources and assets.

You may substitute education for experience as follows: master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work OR an LL.B. or J.D., in a field related to this position.
OR
You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
