Duties
As a Health Scientist you will:
Plans and conducts scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health problems. Identifies and analyzes public health issues and their impact on operations that are critical to the public health community at large. Applies established methodologies and techniques.
Searches, synthesizes and interprets information relevant to public health. Reviews and analyzes studies and projects assessing public health issues in order to make recommendations or processes, procedures and/or policies related to public health programs, practices and research.
Provides technical advice and assistance to national, state and local health agencies and to various other organizations. Collaborates on programs/projects/studies and coordinates efforts, as appropriate, with other program staff, other CDC Centers, Institutes and Offices, other federal agencies, national, State, local health agencies, and private and non-profit organizations, etc.
Communicates information to various audiences. Prepares scientific and other articles and technical reports for publication. Makes presentations at international and national meetings.
As part of an emergency response, the incumbent designs, oversees, implements, and conducts major scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve related to the public health problem being addressed. During the emergency response activation, the incumbent analyzes data in order to identify trends and issues and their impact on emergency response operations that are critical to resolving the public health emergency. As part of the emergency response, develops and or uses innovative methodologies and techniques to address the public health emergency
As part of an emergency response, searches, synthesizes and interprets information relevant to the public health emergency and reviews and analyzes studies and projects assessing major and/or sensitive issues related to the public health emergency in order to recommend processes, procedures and /or policies related to programs, practices and research that would help end the public health emergency.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level, which must include the following experience: including a full range of epidemiologic and surveillance activities, assist with scientific writings and presentations, and supporting partnerships. .
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: including a full range of epidemiologic and surveillance activities, assist with scientific writings and presentations, and supporting partnerships.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
