Duties

As a Health Scientist, you will: Provide knowledge about public health systems and vaccination programs at the local, state, or national level. Provide authoritative knowledge of readiness and response to public health threats, such as infectious disease outbreaks or public health emergencies that require coordination between federal and state, tribal, local, or territorial jurisdictions. Contribute to emergency response planning (e.g., experience with tabletop exercises, reviewing and writing emergency plans) and response (e.g., participating in outbreak responses, serving in an Incident Command Structure, conducting After Action Reviews). Gain understanding of, and competence in, new subjects, such as a particular pathogen, public health issue, or emergency response. Communicate scientific and technical information effectively, efficiently, and clearly for publication in communications with federal and STLT partners, CDC webpages, scientific journals, and for peer review. Represent the agency on assigned projects and internal and external work groups, interact with high level officials and representatives from public and private public health organizations.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing leadership, management, coordination, and guidance in public health preparedness and emergency response. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
