This position serves as a Telephone Operator for the entire Gallup Service Unit that includes the main hospital, a large ambulatory care clinic system, and three satellite locations. The primary purpose is to operate a computerized console telephone switchboard to connect incoming and outgoing calls. This includes monitoring associated equipment such as radios, a centralized medical gas, fire and patient alarms systems, paging systems, security surveillance cameras, and cells phones.
Duties
Receives incoming local and long-distance commercial or government telephone calls and connects to the appropriate office or individual by regular extension or by using the paging system. Place long-distance calls to other hospitals and place special calls including occasionally overseas. Incumbent uses exceptional telephone courtesy and tact in dealing with a diversity of callers, sometimes under difficult and stressful circumstances.
Ascertains information from caller in order to make proper connection when the caller is unclear. Furnishes direct factual information on routine matters such as hospital visiting hours, clinic appointment system, and other requested information when there is no question as to propriety of releasing such information. Refers inquiries on inpatient patient condition to the appropriate nursing station, nursing supervisor, doctor or in accordance to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIP AA} regulations. Refers other inquiries to appropriate office or staff member.
Responds to hospital emergency alarms by annunciating the proper code via the overhead system and contacting appropriate personnel on the radio pocket pagers or telephone. Utilizes the two-way radio to contact Security in emergency situation. Monitors the hospital fire alarm system and takes appropriate actions. Monitors multi-units of security surveillance cameras that are located throughout the hospital and General Services area. Insures that all surveillance cameras are in operating condition and reports any discrepancies to the appropriate official and supervisor. Notifies Security personnel of any unusual or suspicious situations immediately.
Establishes and maintains a current directory of staff personnel, administrative and medical callback duty schedules and listing of assigned pagers and telephone numbers. Insures that key personnel on the priority list for emergency calls are updated for each shift. Performs routine clerical services for the Branch on evening and night shifts by retrieving and filing documents; including typing assignments.
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-04: successfully completed 2 years above high school -or- Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
Combining Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grades GS-5 and below.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
