Duties
As a Science Officer, you will:
Serve as the principal scientific medical advisor and Science Officer to the Office of Science Dissemination (OSD) Director, and senior leaders on scientific matters for the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) Series and Vital Signs Reports.
Provide supervision and guidance to the MMWR Science Team that is comprised of senior level scientists.
Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary.
Review reports, scientific papers, memoranda, and other similar scientific research materials for the purpose of providing written recommendations concerning these scientific issues and recommendations for publication.
Advise on the operational aspects of studies (collections and analysis of data, coverage and techniques of sampling, use of controls, etc.), and is instrumental in ensuring that research capabilities are utilized to the fullest extent.
Provide consultation and technical assistance to State and local agencies, and non-governmental organizations in the conduct of science related to organization's activities and programs.
Provide scientific advice and recommendations that will be used by public health and medical professionals, policy makers, health care managers, congressional committees, media, and others to inform and improve disease preparation, prevention, and response.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: developing, editing, and publishing scientific publications or peer-reviewed journal publications; and providing scientific consultation, review, and approval of scientific and medical information for public dissemination and scientific publication.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
