This position serves as the Mechanical Shop Supervisor, covering the following trades: Machining,
Pipefitting, Plumbing, and Building Automation Systems (BAS). This shop falls under the general
supervision of the Supervisor for Maintenance, Operations, Repair and Readiness (MORR)
Section at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center, its associated Community Based
Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and all other locations under its jurisdiction.
Duties
The incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating, testing, adjusting, balancing, and directing all work performed by the following trades: Machining, Pipefitting, Plumbing, and BAS. Equipment under the purview of this shop includes the following building service equipment:
steam distribution systems, hydronic distribution systems, fuel distribution systems, fire suppression generation and distribution systems, domestic water systems, storm drain systems (site and facility), irrigation systems, drain/waste/vent (DWV) systems, and BAS monitoring and
control systems. Other non- building service equipment covered includes hood/exhaust systems, residential appliance equipment, eye wash/emergency showers and water treatment and distribution systems. Work will be performed under the general supervision of the MORR
Engineer. Incumbent is familiar with and can assign, closeout, manipulate, and transfer data from the work order/PM/equipment inventory systems. This position supervises seven (7) Pipefitters (WG- 10), one (1) Sheet Metal Mechanic (WG-10), two (2) Insulators (WG-09), and one (1)
Medical Equipment Repairer- WG 4805-10.
The incumbent has full administrative accountability for matters such as attendance, leave, and discipline for subordinate positions. Establishes deadlines of work assignment for all personnel, training, motivating and directing subordinates in testing, adjusting balancing, repair,
modification, installation and troubleshooting. The incumbent will plan work assignments based on general work schedules, methods and policies by higher-level supervisors. The incumbent is responsible for responding to and making work assignments to provide first response to trouble
calls and/or service calls in a hospital setting. The incumbent works as the primary responder in radio and telephone contact with other facility personnel such as police, administrators, utility system operators and the engineering work order clerks. Incumbent will respond or assign tasks to
mitigate problems where his/her abilities and/or experience safely permit. Incumbent makes necessary communications with appropriate personnel on and off station to ensure proper actions are taken to mitigate problems, including any follow-up actions and elevation of issues to higher
level decision makers.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work progress, inspections, and supervision require regular and recurring physical exertion
involving walking, standing, bending, climbing, etc. The incumbent must be able to climb and
work from ladders. Management and administrative work are performed in a sedentary office
environment. Must have good vision; glasses and/or contacts are acceptable.
