Duties

At VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, our health care teams are deeply experienced and guided by the needs of Veterans, their families, and caregivers. The individual will be experienced, competent in all phases of Periodontics Program in accordance with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) guidelines including but not limited to: diagnostic procedures consistent with the practice of Periodontics and Dental Implantology treatment of mild, moderate, or severe periodontal disease surgical open flap debridement and osseous recontouring for the treatment of advanced periodontal disease treatment of the tissue defects by hard and soft tissue grafting and recontouring with various grafting materials treatment of cosmetic and functional defects resulting from service trauma dentoalveolar surgery and complex dental extractions treatment of orofacial infections treatment of orofacial trauma. The individual will have experience in dental implantology including: competency in the placement of osseointegrated dental implants knowledge of the restorative aspects of dental implants treatment of peri-implant diseases and conditions. competent in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment care in all the above areas. They must be trained and competent in: providing minimal conscious sedation moderate IV conscious sedation certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Manage medically complex patients and provide appropriate periodontal treatment. competent in assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and post treatment care in all the above areas. The Periodontics Program Director is directly involved and has the responsibility for the development of the educational program and coordination of the program contents under guidance of the Chief of Dental Service and in accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Standards for Advanced Education in Periodontics. Ensure alignment of the program with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission, Facility and Service goals. The incumbent will be responsible for providing direct patient care performing periodontal and dental implant procedures. The Periodontics Program Director has oversight of the curriculum, seminar content and clinical experiences. This includes the didactic, clinical, teaching and research portions of the program. The individual must be able to work collegially with other dentists and physicians, and should possess the skills, both interpersonal and professional, to work with residents in Periodontics, other dental specialties and Advanced General Dentistry. Will assign duties to the Dental Assistants assigned to the program and residents. Provide feedback to improve performance to dental assistants, residents and convey the same to the supervisor. Evaluate employee's performance and provide to the first line supervisor of the Dental Assistants. Notifies the Section Chief and the Supervisor of those Dental Assistants whose performance is marginal or unsatisfactory. Assignment includes advanced understanding and use of the computerized record system. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed an ADA-accredited approved residency program in Periodontics. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: A DDS / DMD degree with a Masters or PhD. Board Certified according to the rules of the American Board of Periodontology. Dental Staff Requirements: Leadership / Manager Positions:Dentists in leadership positions must demonstrate outstanding professional ability in the practice of dentistry or a dental specialty, and healthcare administration, as well as the ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These would include, but are not limited to dental practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to light lift under 15 pounds and light carrying less than 15 pounds. Straight pulling, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, standing 4 hours, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13' to 16' to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish shades of colors, and hearing (aid permitted).
