Duties
The VA Greater Los Angeles (GLA) Health Care System provides comprehensive dental care at the Los Angeles VA Clinic. The VA GLA offers advanced training in various Dental Specialty Programs as well as General Practice Residency. These Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited programs offer both didactic and clinical education and experiences while serving Veterans of Los Angeles. All programs emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to oral healthcare, incorporating both inpatient and outpatient settings.

This individual will be experience and competent in all phases of Periodontics. Must be trained and competent in providing minimal conscious sedation, moderate IV conscious sedation and be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Must be able to manage medically complex patients and provide appropriate periodontal treatment. Have experience in teaching. Responsible for the development of the educational program and coordination of the program contents under guidance of the Chief of Dental Service and in accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards for Advanced Education in Periodontics. Has oversight of the curriculum, seminar content and clinical experiences. This includes the didactic, clinical, teaching and research portions of the program. Have experience in Research including submissions to the Institutional Review Board. Oversees and assigns duties to the Dental Assistants assigned to the Program and Residents. Develop and supervise a rotation program of Dental Residents. Performs all types of periodontal treatment. Treat mild, moderate and severe periodontal disease. Plan and place osseointegrated dental implants. Participates in didactics as needed for program requirement. This includes seminars, implant board meetings in which residents present their cases. Participate in research when pre-approved to do so.

Qualifications
Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and will have completed a CODA accredited training program in Periodontics, in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Board Certification: The Post Graduate Periodontics Program Director will be board certified in accordance with the rules of the American Board of Periodontology.
Preferred Experience:
1. At least 5 years of experience as a Board Certified Periodontist ~AND~
2. At least 3 years experience as a part-time or a full-time faculty in a fully accredited Periodontics Program in United States. ~AND~
3. At least 5 years experience in private practice in Periodontics in United States, with full, unrestricted license from State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

Physical Requirements:
Be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents.
Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds over), reaching above the shoulder and repeated bending.
Be emotionally and mentally stable and capable to perform the duties of the position.
