About the Position: Chief of the Geology/Hydrogeology and HTRW Design Section with responsibilities for surface and subsurface explorations including surface geologic mapping, core drilling and support to the District's HTRW program. Plans and assigns studies, projects and/or areas of responsibility within overall work schedules. Keeps appraised of timeliness, adequacy and status of overall work through contacts, discussions, observations and review of reports and completed work products.
Duties
Serves as Chief of the Geology/Hydrogeology and HTRW Design Section with responsibilities for surface and subsurface geological/hydrogeolological explorations including surface geologic mapping, core drilling and support to the HTRW program.
Plans projects and studies independently or with help and by assignment to other geologists. Plans and executes geologic and construction materials projects for large dams, power plants and other engineering projects.
Determines the duties and responsibilities of each position and reports any changes on a timely basis so that the position description will accurately describe the duties and responsibilities assigned to each employee supervised.
Administers leave, development and maintenance of effective discipline; initiates personnel and position action requests; encourages participation in the suggestion program.
Schedules work, assigns resources, determines if work is to be done in-house or by contract, and assures coordination among technical disciplines.
Establishes processes for and assures accomplishment of required field work, geologic design, report preparation, health and safety compliance, schedules monitoring and review of geology and hydrology sections work.
Investigates and recommends engineering solutions to widely varying foundation problem including landslides, underground cavities, faults, joints, bedding planes, erratic weathering of rock and underlying ground water conditions encountered.
Initiates personnel and position action requests.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Safe work practices are an integral part of the position. Incumbent is required to know, comply with, and promote prescribed safety rules and regulations.
- The incumbent must participate in a medical surveillance program and must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, air purifying respirators, protective clothing, etc.
- The incumbent must successfully undergo a physical or provide other documentation which verifies that they are physically and emotionally able to work in hazardous environments utilizing personal protective equipment.
- One year supervisory probationary period may be required.

Basic Requirement for Geologist (GS-1350 Series)
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.(Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience, and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.)
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 which includes planning and executing investigations required to characterize and determine the horizontal and vertical extent of contamination for a number of waste sites. Investigations include both soil and groundwater explorations.
Selective Placement Factor: Professional registration as a Geologist is required at the time of application; and must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
