Duties
This position is for a Physician to assist in providing leadership to one of the preeminent organizations in the world for arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin disease research.
NIAMS focuses on diseases of the bones, joints, muscles, and skin, which are major chronic health problems that impact nearly every household in America. NIAMS is the primary federal agency supporting and conducting arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin disease research. NIAMS strives to invest in research that will drive new discoveries and lead to improved public health and health care.
The Institute focuses on areas with the greatest impact by prioritizing research topics showing scientific promise and amenability to rigorous scientific inquiry. As a responsible steward of resources, NIAMS is extremely selective and supports a broad range of highly meritorious basic, clinical, and translational research.
The Institute also promotes the development of the next generation of scientists through training grants, travel awards, and career development workshops. To carry out its mission, NIAMS has an annual budget exceeding $685 million and a staff of approximately 250 FTEs and roughly 200 non-FTE staff.
The incumbent serves as the Associate Director of Clinical Research and reports directly to the NIAMS Director. The OD provides overall leadership for the Institute that consists of a full spectrum of program, policy, and management functions.
The OD directs and coordinates the Institute's programs, activities and develops and provides policy guidance and staff direction to areas such as program coordination, program planning, scientific research, clinical care, and administrative management.
As the Associate Director of Clinical Research, the incumbent will serve as clinical science advisor for the Institute.
The incumbent exercises a wide latitude of leadership, management responsibility, judgment, initiative, creativity and substantive professional medical knowledge and expertise to lead the Institute's clinical research.
Clinical research involves translational research that applies discoveries generated in the clinical environment to study in biomedical and public health research that aims to improve the health of individuals and the community by translating findings into tools, medicines, procedures, policy, and education.
That speeds the adoption of best practice into a community setting. In this capacity, the incumbent supports clinical research at the NIAMS, serves the patients, collaborates with health care providers, ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws and the standards of accrediting organizations, and innovates best practices in the medical specialty.
