Duties

The position is located in a United States Attorney's Office (USAO). The work involves planning, coordinating and scheduling activities of the Grand Jury. The incumbent performs complex and highly specialized support duties involving sensitive information, legal terminology and judicial processes. Duties performed require considerable exercise of independent discretion and judgment. Typical work assignments will include: Transcribes, prepares and distributes both complex confidential legal correspondence, reports and other documents. Assists in editing and compiling data for grand jury reports and supervises the secure reproduction and distribution of reports. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive materials from public disclosure. Develops orientation materials for new grand jurors. Prepares guidance that explains proceedings, evidentiary and testimony rules and courtroom roles and activities. Drafts and sends juror summons. Establishes and maintains monthly calendar of grand jury activities including criminal hearings and related matters. Schedules court reports to transcribe proceedings. Schedules translators to assist with grand jury deliberations. Updates and revises the Grand Jury Policy and Procedures Manual to ensure internal controls are efficient and effectively in place. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

GS-8 - To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as: Transcribes, prepares and distributes both complex confidential legal correspondence, reports and other documents; Receives and responds to inquiries by telephone, mail and in person; Assembles all necessary information for presentation of indictments; Creates grand jury calendar; Schedules appearances of and responds to inquiries from attorneys, victims and law enforcement officers; and Coordinates returns of indictments with the Court Clerk. Selective Placement Factor: A selective placement factor is determined to be essential for successful performance in this position. Those candidates who do not meet the following selective placement factor will be rated "not qualified" for the position. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
