Duties
As a Health Scientist (Data Scientist), you will:
Bring and develop expertise in the fields of health science, artificial intelligence (e.g., machine learning), and programming languages as applied to public health
Consult and collaborate with statistical, data science, artificial intelligence (e.g., machine learning), and public health professionals including epidemiologist in the collection, linkage, processing, coding, classification, and analysis of public health surveillance, research, and administrative health data.
Assist in preparing comprehensive reports that include discussion of substantive issues related to data science methodology for public health surveillance and related applications, assessment of the adequacy and quality of data used in the analyses, and explanation of the methods, results, and relevance to the health issue under study.
Learn and use current data science methods and tools to plan and conduct research using public health data systems, including survey data, health care facility data, electronic health records, insurance claims, vital records, and other data sources.

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: programming languages such as Python, PySpark, and SQL; data processing and analysis using cloud-based big data and analytics platforms such as Databricks; and collaborating and consulting on epidemiologic, surveillance, research, and analytical studies.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
