About the Position: This is a developmental position, classified at less than the full performance level for recruitment and training purposes.

Duties

Performs journeyman level work with assignments designed to provide the competencies, skills, and experience required to perform the more complex work at the full performance grade level. The work increases in difficulty, complexity, and responsibility as the incumbent gains experience and demonstrates a full comprehension of assigned work. Conducts technical forestry studies involving the department, testing, and demonstration of new techniques and the most economical methods of selling or harvesting timber. Recognizes and identifies all endangered species that have been listed in the area of project responsibility. Plans and organizes work to provide for the inspection and administration of an assigned group of timber and pine straw sales contracts.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Subject to call 24 hours a day seven days a week in case of emergency to suppress forest fires. May be required to work during periods of inclement weather. Weekend and Holiday work may be required.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Forester (Motor Vehicle Operator): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas: Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-11 Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience which includes: assisting in the development, implementation of the timber management program; developing drafts for and executing approved plans for timber management projects, such as timber sales, reforestation, and vegetation control in reforestation areas; assisting timber administration of the forest area including safety, information, education, and planning. OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as combination of timber management, biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: assisting in the implementation of the timber management program; coordinating with authorities for approved plans for timber management projects, such as timber sales, reforestation, and vegetation control in reforestation areas; assisting timber administration of the forest area including safety, information, education, and planning. OR Education:Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as combination of timber management, biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: assisting in the implementation of the timber management program; participating in forest management, timber management, and fire control projects; and assisting administration of the forest area including safety, information, education, and planning. OR Education: One full academic year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as combination of timber management, biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering of study.
