This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) with one vacancy located in Plainsboro, NJ.

Duties
As a Computer Operator, you will perform the following duties:
Operate a variety of computer equipment and related auxiliary and peripheral devices to process a wide range of scientific applications and related programs. Monitor system's status and performance, observe and respond to system's messages, and define, isolate, and resolve equipment and operating failures and malfunctions. Monitor and facilitate the operation of the physical plant, assist with correction of mechanical failures, maintain the plant, and prevent the disruption of vital services according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) policies.
Monitor, troubleshoot and escalate High Performance Computing (HPC) issues to system and vendor staff. Troubleshoot user issues, respond to Help Desk tickets, keep users informed of resolution progression, triage and investigate tickets for users as they come in.
Comply with vendor and manufacturer preventative maintenance requirements and use system management tools to ensure proper work methods are being followed in order to maximize operational efficiency. Support IT Staff with various tasks and non-interference projects as well as system deployments and routine maintenance such as patching, updates, etc.

EDUCATION: There is no positive education requirement for this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify at the ZT-3 or GS-09 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZT-2 or GS-08 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Monitoring the operations of computer systems to identify problems, run diagnostic software routines, or realign equipment interconnections;
Providing response to user requests for information and assistance; and
Resolving equipment and operating failures and malfunctions.
