This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Serve as a Range Inspector for Range Operations, DPTMS at Fort Walker, Virginia. Responsible for providing oversight to training conducted on the ranges, training areas, and maneuver areas. Ensure compliance with Dept of Def (DoD), Dept of Army (DA), and Fort Walker regulations.
Duties
Responsible for providing oversight to training conducted on the ranges, training areas, and maneuver areas.
Works as a Range Inspector to perform periodic onsite surveys for training organizations.
Inspects facilities to include but not limited to ranges, urban facilities, training areas, and maneuver areas to determine compliance with applicable safety standards in accordance to approved training packets.
Works under the supervision of the Range Current Operations Supervisor.
Reports maintenance status of ranges and range operations equipment.
Operates the Current Operations Customer Service Desk and Fire Desk radio room.
Provides briefings to unit personnel as assigned, to include but not limited to Range Safety Officer (RSO) and Range Officer in Charge (ROIC).
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance for the duration of employment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- Temporary Duty (TDY) travel may be required 10% of the time.
- This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 based on access to firearms, munitions, and explosives.
- This is a mission essential position.
- This position requires rotating shifts. Shift work is required to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position requires the incumbent to lift 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Scheduled and unscheduled overtime may be required to support high density training periods.
- Work is performed in all kinds of weather in an outdoor environment where the possibility of hazards exists.
- Work requires driving on hazardous roads and terrain during all types of weather conditions in outdoor environment, however, some work is performed in office environment.
- This is a drug testing position. You must pass a pre-appointment drug test and at anytime randomly after appointment.
- Applicants must pass a pre-employment physical exam prior to appointment to the position.
- Work requires walking on uneven terrain under a variety of working conditions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes performing periodic onsite surveys for training organizations; Inspecting facilities to include but not limited to ranges, urban facilities, training areas, and maneuver areas to determine compliance with applicable safety standards in accordance to approved training packets.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
