Duties

This is being announced at multiple grade levels. Duties listed below will be performed in a developmental capacity at the GS-05/06 grade level. At the full performance, GS-07, the incumbent will: Respond to all fire emergencies to include those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations, wild land fires, hazardous material incidents and aircraft emergencies. Use firefighting equipment to include hoses, ladders, hydrants, firefighting vehicles, etc. to control the incident. Respond to emergencies which may include hazardous material. Analyze the hazardous incident and determine the magnitude of the problem. Serve as a first responder to medical emergencies and perform medical procedures that are noninvasive.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program; must pass urinalysis testing as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • An applicant not currently occupying a GS-0081 position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations as required by DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Required to drive a motor vehicle. A valid state and government driver's license is required.
  • Required to obtain an Emergency Vehicle Operator's Certification to operate vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • Required to complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
  • Must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
  • Position designated Mission Essential, required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.
  • Must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Occasional Travel required (not more than 5%).
  • This position may require travel by air or ground.

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. To qualify at the GS-06 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) control and extinguish fires; 2) operate emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions; and 3) participate as a member of a crew to contain or control hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). To qualify at the GS-07 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) control and extinguish fires; 2) operate emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions; 3) perform rescue operations/providing prompt and efficient patient care; 4) detect, reduce, or eliminate potential fire hazards; and 5) control hazardous materials incidents and/or develop, implement, or provide training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
