Duties
Direct major pieces of firefighting apparatus, an ambulance crew, and six to eight firefighters.
Ensure that crew members keep equipment and emergency vehicles in good working order, that fire stations and grounds are kept clean at all times, and that proper records are kept for the assigned crew.
Direct the crew to firefighting positions, placement of apparatus, and execute fire ground related tasks.
Coordinate the operation of the emergency response team. Respond to accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses, some of which may be life threatening.
Serve as part of a firefighting crew with responsibility for all firefighting, rescues, medical, and hazardous materials incidents.
Perform fire prevention inspections as directed.
Inspect equipment and apparatus to ensure maintenance and operation is in accordance with directives/guidelines.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Work requires driving a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required. An Emergency Vehicle Operators certification is desired.
- This position may require incumbent to travel by air or ground.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
- Incumbent required to work a minimum of 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
- You may be expected to travel up to 5% for this position.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience performing structural firefighting response including controlling and extinguishing fires and rescue operations and responding to accidents and other medical emergencies involving injuries and illnesses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
