Chamber Security Staff serve as the first point of contact for entry onto the House Floor. They ensure controlled access to the House Floor by permitting only those allowed access under the House rules. Chamber Security Staff assist with the relay of communication and ensure that emergency and security violations are discovered and reported to the appropriate authority. Chamber Security Staff ensure that order and decorum rules are followed according to House rules and precedents.

Duties

Duties: 1. Control entrance to the House Floor and Speaker's Lobby by identifying Members and checking credentials of other authorized personnel such as Congressional staff and members of the media. 2. Facilitate requests for Members from the Floor for staff and the press. 3. Bring authenticated bills and other official documents into the Chamber. 4. Assist with the coordination of security and emergency protocols to include: Relaying emergency communications to Members and Floor staff. Directing Members to established safe havens. Assisting with the distribution of life safety equipment. 5. Provide access control for Member meetings and briefings. 6. Answer questions, assist with training new employees, and model good behavior. 7. Support House Recovery Operations structure. 8. Perform other official duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The incumbent must possess the following: ability to complete and pass approved training courses required by the Office of the Sergeant at Arms; ability to recognize Members of Congress and appropriate leadership staff; must be tactful and courteous in dealing with Members, staff, and the general public; must be physically able to stand for long periods of time; must be able to work well under pressure and display good judgement. The incumbent must have refined people and communication skills and the ability to develop strong working relationships with senior level staff, officials, and Members of Congress. The incumbent must be able to work long hours with varying start and finish times. Work Schedule: Applicants must be able to work every day the House is in session with variable working hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary and occasional training and Congressional events. Applicants are required to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays on a BELO contract consistent with 2 U.S.C. § 1313(c)(3).

Qualifications

The incumbent must be at least 21 years old with a Bachelor's degree or must have two or more years of experience relevant to the position. Previous Legislative Branch experience is preferred.
