There is a full-time Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant position open at the Milwaukee VAMC, with a potential to travel to the Green Bay VA Health Center.

Major duties and responsibilities of the position:
Manage patients in collaboration with the cardiothoracic surgeons, providing specialty care to patients with acute and chronic problems.
Orders and interprets diagnostic studies.
Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
Participate in surgical procedures as a surgical assistant for cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and other specialties (such as vascular surgery) as required, performing specific components of procedures supported by training such as endoscopic vein harvesting, robotic cases and open cases under the direction of the attending surgeon. Participate in urgent/emergent take back cardiothoracic surgery cases on an occasional basis.
Triage or address consults for immediate care or elective care through the cardiothoracic surgery clinic or other surgical clinics and initiates referrals/consults to specialty services.
Participate in rounds with the team, conducting essential duties as a member of the team that may include admission H&P, admission orders, daily notes, discharge planning, discharge orders and notes, answering pages from the inpatient wards and providing overall management of the inpatient in collaboration with the surgical teams.
Perform preoperative H&P in a timely manner and complete a patient assessment.
Provides education to patients and their families.
Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Participate in surgical clinic, and manage inpatients as required with making rounds on weekends on an occasional basis.
Support other surgical specialties as assigned or requested in the operating room, clinic, and wards.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (NP) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.
Preferred Experience:
Managing patients who need cardiothoracic surgery services on an outpatient or inpatient basis is preferred.
Experience with endoscopic vein and radial artery harvesting for CABG procedures and as an assistant for robotic or open thoracic or cardiac procedures is preferred.
Experience as a first assistant in cardiothoracic surgery cases is preferred.
Grade Determinations:
Three years of successful practice as a PA, or
Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, US Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency and one year of professional practice as a PA, or
A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education and one year of professional practice as a PA.
The full performance level of this vacancy is PA-III
