About the Position: This position is within the Patient Administration Records at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, TX. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients. Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the International Code of Diseases-10 Clinical Modifications (ICD-10-CM), and Procedure Coding System (PCS) coding books. Perform quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Analyze and interpret documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data. Perform utilization review of records to assure diagnosis responsible for the length of stay is appropriately identified and the secondary diagnoses are sequenced properly to assure maximum allocation under the Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) system. Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. General Experience GS-04: One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as, providing customer service, answering customer inquiries, resolving recurring problems, interpreting rules and regulations, utilizing automated systems, knowledge of medical terminology, managing medical records. OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of by 60. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes: researching electronic health systems; utilizing various office automated systems and software; collecting information for coding; retrieving medical records and reports from databases; knowledge of basic medical coding. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: updating patient medical records; gathering/input data from an automated medical record coding system; knowledge of ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM coding books and procedures; identifying the correct medical code for each procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Certification from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) with either Clinical Coding Associate (CCA), Clinical Coding Specialist (CCS), Clinical Coding Specialist - Provide Based (CCS-P), or American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coder (CPC) - Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) is preferred.
