Duties
Major Duties:
This position drives vehicles that require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), based on the type or kind of equipment being operated.
Operates one or more heavy gasoline or diesel powered wheeled or crawler type engineering and construction equipment to excavate, backfill, grade or level earth to specifications.
Performs rough grading as well as.fine surfacing on flat or rolling terrain. May perform fine grading with closer instruction and supervision.
Moves earth and rock, piles brush, etc. on steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, and other surfaces with similar rough features to grade the earth to the general contour desired on trails, roads, or construction sites.
Ensures equipment is maintained in good working condition. Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, minor repairs and adjustments, and maintains proper records.
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement, by the closing date of this announcement, 09/18/2024. (If selected, you will be required to submit copies of licences and certificates for verification).

Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is used in constantly reaching, turning, and bending and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The work is strenuous because of the generally larger pieces of equipment and the requirement for more frequent adjustments under more adverse operating conditions.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in all kinds of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Operators are exposed to increased injury risk due to the larger more complicated equipment and environment that the work is performed in. They are exposed to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust.
Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
