This position is located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona, and assigned to the Ophthalmology Department. The primary function of this position is to provide comprehensive ophthalmic assistant services to the Ophthalmology patients and provide administrative and clinical/technical tasks as the lead. Incumbent ensures patients receive quality patient centered care.

Duties

This position functions as the work leader for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistants (Health Technicians), and will also serve as front-line health care personnel; incumbent performs a combination of clinical/technical (non-professional medical) and administrative tasks related to the treatment and care of patients in an ambulatory environment. Assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee has enough work to keep busy by monitoring duties, patient schedules and no-shows. Check on work in progress or spot check work not requiring review (e. g., previsit planning or direct services) and review completed work to see that department goals on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met. Performs intake procedures by obtaining chief complaint/purpose of visit; refraction, vision, pupil exam, motility and confrontation visual field testing, other testing modalities to include but not limited to OCT, auto-refraction, visual field, cataract pre-surgery A-scan and other measurements, assist in procedures. Reassess as a patient's condition warrant's including pre and post clinical procedures to evaluate response to treatment including pain. Collaboratively assess the patient's perception of the effectiveness of therapy. Operates and monitors equipment (i.e. Humphrey Visual Field, Zeiss OCT, Auto-refractors, Slit lamps, A-scans, Refractors, Pre-operative cataract surgery testing, etc.) demonstrates safe and effective use of equipment and reports malfunctions of equipment; appropriately takes malfunctioning equipment out of service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GS-08:At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performs auto-refraction; Performs dry refraction using the phoropter; Assesses anterior chamber depth and anterior segment health using the slit lamp; Performs pachymetry; Performs A-scan biometry, B-scan and intra-ocular lens power calculations preoperatively to assist in cataract surgery lens determination; Ability to accurately measure intraocular pressures using Goldman application and Tonopen methodologies; Performs pupillary assessment including RAPD (relative afferent pupillary defect.; Performs retinal photography; Advanced ocular motility and confrontation visual field testing; Performs Color vision testing. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR for GS-08 grade level: Certification as a Certified Opthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) (If yes, you must provide a copy of your certification with your application) Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
