About the Position: The Fort Peck Project is located in northeastern Montana on the Missouri River about 17 miles southeast of Glasgow, Montana. The Project encompasses Fort Peck Dam and Lake and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facilities. Authorized purposes include flood control, navigation, hydroelectric power, fish and wildlife, recreation, irrigation, public water and water quality.

Duties

Serve as Project Office Safety Representative in support of a large multi-purpose main stem civil works project containing hydropower, recreation, flood control, and support facilities. Assist managers in planning and managing a comprehensive safety occupational health program to eliminate or control the risk of injury to personnel assigned to all phases of the safety and occupational health activities. Interpret regulations, provides advice, and prepares written procedures for implementation of safety prevention activities including mishap prevention and safe materials handling practices. Apply regulations, standards, and sound safety practices to detect and identify unhealthy conditions, hazardous operations and conditions and recommends proper safety and occupational health measures. Prepare and conduct required general safety and technical safety trainings to supervisors and employees utilizing a variety of materials, devises, and aids. Identify, document, and track to completion any discrepancies and/or violations. Identify training needs and develops, schedules, monitors, and conducts training workshops and meetings in support of assigned program areas.

  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a state issued driver’s license.

GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Conducting inspections to ensure compliance with safety and occupational health laws and regulations. AND 2) Preparing reports of findings on unhealthy conditions, hazardous operations and conditions. AND 3) Developing and conducting safety and occupational health training. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Conducting inspections to ensure compliance with safety and occupational health laws and regulations. AND 2) Preparing reports of findings on unhealthy conditions, hazardous operations and conditions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: ComplianceSafety and Health Training and EducationSafety and Occupational Health (SOH) Hazard Identification GS-11: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). GS-09: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
