About the Position: This is a permanent position with Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Office of History, located at 7701 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, VA.
Management may select at either grade level advertised.
Duties
Manages, organizes, and arranges archival collection to facilitate access and enhance preservation.
Implements archival policies, professional standards and procedures pertaining to acquisitions, collections management, and other collections accountability processes to develop plans and objectives to support the organization's missions.
Directs archival development and acquisition; formulates collection development plans; and prepares finding aids.
Functions as resident expert on the content of the Research Collection and provides references services for internal and external customers.
Directs the work of archival contractors and student workers.
Uses computers and computer applications to analyze and communicate information in the appropriate format.
Manages computer equipment essential to archival description to ensure proper maintenance of collection, storage, cataloging, and control.
Establishes an accurate inventory of organization archives using a variety of electronic systems for maintaining, tracking and record-keeping purposes.
Represents the organization with federal entities, academic institutions, historical societies and private institutions to discuss archival matters.
Applies preservation techniques, methodologies and best practices to assess and evaluate collections to determine historical value and relationship to other material.
Writes reports and policy documents for staff, internal and external audiences.
Participates in the development and implementation of overall policies and procedures for the organization.
Helps USACE activities to identify, arrange, and preserve historic documents, photographs, and film; works with records, managers and the National Archives to facilitate the disposition, transfer, and preservation of USACE historic material.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- Work requires physical demands such as prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and other physical demands.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license in one of the 50 U.S states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- Incumbent must be able to lift up to 40lbs.
- A pre-employment physical is required.

Basic Education Requirements for Archivist:
A. Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in archival science; or bachelor's degree (or higher degree) with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: At least 30 semester hours of courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Acceptable experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience for a GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in the efforts to acquire new archival materials; conducting inventory of existing archival materials; assessing collection of archival materials to determine their historical value and relationship to other material in the archive collection; and organizing the collection of new archival materials to enhance preservation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Specialized Experience for a GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service which includes leading the efforts to diversify new archival materials; serving as the organization's official representative on archival matters; conducting thorough inventory of an organization's existing archival materials; assessing collection of archival materials to determine their historical value and relationship to other material in the archive collection; and managing the collection of new archival materials to enhance preservation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
