About the Position: This position is located at the Naval Medical Center Hospital at San Diego CA. Directorate of clinical laboratory.
This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
Duties
Work under the general supervision of a Hospital Laboratory Supervisory Medical Technologist who provides initial guidance on areas of responsibility and priorities.
Operate complex semi automated and automated equipment and performs calibration procedures, periodic operator maintenance tasks, troubleshooting procedures to identify the cause of malfunctions.
Conduct necessary quality control procedures.
Prepare different blood components to include splitting products for neonate transfusions using sterile welding procedures into special syringe components bags.
Perform special coagulation testing including mixing studies and bleeding times.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds may be required.
- This is an inclement weather essential position: Incumbent is expected to make every attempt to report duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position may require up 5% Travel around or away from duty station

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing complex testing in a clinical laboratory setting; maintaining and/or troubleshooting equipment; and conducting quality control procedures.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
AND
Certificate: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is required.
