The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Florida (NDFL) is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the Northern District of Florida. This includes criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers.

Duties

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Florida is seeking applications from experienced attorneys who have superb research and writing skills as well as a civil law background to fill an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) vacancy in the Civil Division. This position offers a dynamic civil practice with a challenging mix of cases and represents a great opportunity for an attorney seeking federal litigation experience. Among other responsibilities, the successful candidate will handle defensive litigation in the areas of employment discrimination, torts, and other matters where we defend the interests of the United States. The successful candidate also may be called on to handle affirmative civil litigation where the United States is a plaintiff when fraud has been committed against the United States government. The defensive and affirmative dockets present an array of challenging cases that yields significant trial experience, including jury trials. Civil AUSAs enjoy a high degree of camaraderie in a cohesive, self-supporting environment Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information. Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.   • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.
  • The NDFL also requires applicants submit a writing sample, not to exceed 5 pages, with their application.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: A minimum of five (5) years of recent civil litigation experience is desired. Preferred applicants should possess exceptional analytical ability, judgment, and advocacy skills, as well as a commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Finally, preferred applicants must possess the ability to manage cases of a complex and varying nature. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
