Duties

You will be directly responsible for the management and operation of the Pensacola Legal Assistance division, and associated tax center, which provide legal services to eligible clients. You will establish case strategy and tactics; prepares pre-hearing motions and petitions; identifies relevant witnesses and documents via discovery procedures, including interrogatories and depositions. You will conduct research and prepare legal memoranda in connection with pending cases and analyze factual and legal issues. You will conduct pre-hearing examination of witnesses as well as examination and cross-examination of witnesses during hearings. You will present opening and closing statements, make legal arguments in support of the agency's position, and prepare post-hearing briefs, appeals, or responses. You will provide consultation, advice, assistance, and representation to active duty and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces, their dependents, and other entitled by statute or regulations of legal assistance. You will serve as a supervisory attorney over new Judge Advocates, legalmen, and civilian paralegal staff who work in the Legal Assistance Office.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate most of the following: 1) Providing legal assistance services and limited scope representation to eligible persons; 2) Continuously mentoring, training and supervising legal personnel and non-attorney staff; 3) Conducting legal assistance and preventative law outreach activities; 4) Serving as a supervisory (within the rules of professional responsibility) attorney. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. An official certificate issued within the past 3 months showing the applicant is a member in good standing of the Bar of the highest court of the State of Florida or sufficient proof that the same has been requested with the appropriate licensing authority. Additionally, a Certificate or Letter of Good Standing with the Bar of the highest court of the State of Florida that was issued within the past 3 months must be presented to the hiring manager within 15 calendar days of notification of selection. Upon selections the following documents will be requested: Resume showing relevant experience and a cover letter that addresses the evaluation criteria of this position. An official transcript of the applicant's law school record together with an official statement of his/her relative standing in his/her class. However, if the individual has been a member of the Bar for 5 years or more, the transcript requirement may be waived. An official statement that his/her fitness to practice law or his/her conduct as an attorney have never been challenged. If either his/her fitness or conduct has been challenged, an official statement concerning the facts and circumstances together with any explanation that the applicant himself/herself may wish to submit. Certificate of Good Standing issued within the past 3 months showing the applicant is a member in good standing of the Bar of the highest court of a State of the United States or a Territory of the United States or sufficient proof that the same has been requested with the appropriate licensing authority. Writing sample of two pages or less. The writing sample may be an excerpt of a longer document but shall not exceed two pages in actual length. SEE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS SECTION FOR MORE INFORMATION. The selectee is required to meet one or more of these employment conditions before the appointee will receive a tentative offer of employment. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to report to any of the scheduled appointments, fails, the medical/agility/drug tests, lacks the certifications requirements, or is unable to obtain a Secret Security Clearance. Incumbents of drug testing designation positions will be subject to random testing. Drug test results will be provided to the employing activity/command.

Education


Must have a J.D. Degree from an ABA accredited law school, be a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of the State of Florida and have legal experience in excess of 2 years commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of this position.
