The Lead Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position serves as the Lead AMSA at grade GS-7 and they are responsible for a range of duties that typify the full-performance and is trained and competent to assist all staff within each of these departments. The occupation involves technical work concerned with scheduling consults, which includes responsibility for interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA National Scheduling Directive guidelines. The work requires practical knowledge of human anatomy, medical terminology, and legal requirements of the medical record. Clear and concise judgment, discretion, customer service, ability to deal with a diverse population, a high degree of tact and negotiating ability are required daily to carry out the functions of the position.
The duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Conducts ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work
Ensures accurate and timely scheduling of appointments
Performs spot checks to ensure that staff are processing consults following national guidelines and appropriate authorizations are entered
Distributes and balances workload; creates and maintains employee work schedules
Provides input on performance and disciplinary matters
Oversees adoption and utilization of new tools, technologies, and SOPs into staff and facility work plan
Provides on-the-job training and mentorship for new and current employees
Ensure that all necessary health/administrative information are integrated into Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS)
Provides weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to the supervisor; identifies backlogs in workload and potential procedural problems
Provides guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures
Communicates with all community providers, assists with contacting Veteran to explain pending or new consult request and ensures that Veteran appointments are made with other VA facility, contract site, or community providers
Receives phone calls, determines the nature of requests and provides the information desired using privacy rules and established clinic processes.
Collaborates, communicates, set priorities, and organizes the work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
Acts as liaison between Medical Support Assistants and clinical staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Telework: Position is eligible for Ad hoc Telework only. May be authorized at Supervisory discretion.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of this announcement closing date 09/19/2024.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Specialized Experience must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level (1) collaborating with medical clinicians across multiple disciplines, scheduling interdisciplinary appointments, and possessing an advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community. **Resume must include hours per week for work experience credit. **
Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
1. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources.
2. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient care systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting.
3. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities to meet deadlines.
4. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desires effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff.
5. Ability to provide staff development and training.
6. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact if incomplete work across multiple clinics.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 7.
Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary but may require periods of standing or walking however, there are no physical requirements for the 0679 Medical support Assistant occupation.
