Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 13 Months). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Major duties and responsibilities: Maintains Equipment/supplies/Facilities - 25% Maintains the laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies. Determines compliance with safety requirements. Establishes inventory and equipment maintenance requirements and maintains appropriate inventories and maintenance schedules. Maintains laboratory stock and orders materials, as needed. Maintains laboratory in a clean and safe condition according to agency or accreditation requirements. Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation on timely intervals so as to minimize breakdown and delay of procedures. Conducts work according to Laboratory Safety Regulations and instructs coworkers and graduate students on safety regulations and safe working conditions and is accountable to supervisor to report conditions and progress on eliminating discrepancies. Monitoring equipment function can include weekend and/or holiday checks. Maintains Laboratory Records - 25% Maintains and controls laboratory records. Incumbent is responsible for presenting the data to the supervisor in a logical and systematic fashion. As such, the technician is responsible for some data analysis including arithmetic calculations, algebra, graphing of data using interactive computer programs and preliminary statistical evaluations. Develops and maintains detailed records of all experimental or other protocols. Results are neatly kept and catalogued in appropriate format. Data are often graphed or displayed in tables to highlight results. Records information pertaining to the storage of specimens or reagents and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information. Performs work in the testing and examination procedures carried out in the laboratory. Performs work concerned with the techniques and equipment peculiar to chemical analysis of biological substances or to the study of biochemical relationships. Prepares Specimens - 50% Uses standard aseptic procedures and safeguards. Controls contaminated or potentially dangerous specimens in accordance with accreditation agency requirements. Ensures safe and humane processes a re used with critical concerns for the welfare of the animals used in any research. Performs work involving special breeding or feeding methods for mice and keeps and up-to-date inventory of mouse colonies both the VA and university affiliates (if applicable). Performs advanced laboratory assays, which may include but is not limited to, Western blotting, fluorescent imaging, fand immunocytochemistry, tissue and cell culture, ELISA techniques, DNA isolation and purification, preparation and analysis of RNA, Southern blots, etc., kinase and signal transduction assays. To apply for this position, you must meet one of the following requirements: Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal service that includes experience related to the work of the position for which application is made. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Research activity or control program work. Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment. Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR Education Substitution: Successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Microbiology) position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. OR Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year, i.e., education in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience, as listed above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Microbiology) position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Grants ManagementLife Sciences and SystemsResearchTeamwork IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending over microscopes, manipulating small parts, and lifting moderate to heavy weights. The work also requires fine motor skills and coordination (hand/eye coordination) in the use of laboratory equipment. Some of the work may need to be performed under hoods, Tasks may involve repetitive motion.
