You will serve as a HEALTH TECHNICIAN (OPTICIAN) in the Optical Service Unit (OSU) of NMRTC SAN DIEGO CA.
This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
Duties
You will work as part of the team that fabricates prescription ophthalmic eyewear.
You will perform a step sorting procedure to facilitate the selection of frame and lens stock and verify selected lenses (finish) and frames against an ophthalmic work ticket.
You will accurately use the Humphrey Lens Analyzer to verify power and axis and edge ophthalmic lenses to fit into a variety of non-metal and metal frames using a variety of dry cut edgers.
You will prepare lenses for final inspection by removing blocks on lenses, cleaning lenses, placing a safety bevel on the lens after edging and inserting lenses into a fam by using hot box for non-metal frames.
You will verify completed jobs meet ANSI standards using a lens analyzer.
You will triage patients by phone or in person; schedule patients; answer question about spectacle and contact lens order, take messages for staff doctors; answer question regarding clinic operation and services.
You will enter and retrieve data from Genesis terminals.
You will request medical records, and print clinic schedules with Genesis, and prepare for the following day's appointments by: readying appropriate exam Forms; posting schedules; and reordering undelivered records.
You will drive to any Optometry clinics associated with Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC), San Diego, California.
Requirements

- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience preparing lenses for edging to include sorting jobs by type of lens to be edged, edging ophthalmic lenses to fit a variety of metal and non-metal frames, edging lenses and performing step sorting procedures to facilitate the selection of frame and lens stock, and accurately verifying lens powers and axis;
Experience verifying completed jobs meet ANSI standards using a lens analyzer;
Experience triaging patients by phone or in person and scheduling patients using Genesis;
Experience performing visual fields test, screening and checking in patients; and
Experience performing special testing procedures, re-stocking rooms, and performing color vision tests.

Education
Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:
One and one-half full years of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position

A combination of specialized experience and education as described above that equates to one year of specialized experience
