Duties
Administer non-opiate/opioid oral medications, gives subcutaneous, intra-dermal and intramuscular, and immunizations as ordered after completion of required training and demonstration of competency.
Assist/perform a variety of ambulatory or outpatient procedures under the supervision of a credentialed provider.
Examples of such procedures are minor wound closure using local anesthesia, incision and drainage of minor skin abscesses, simple/uncomplicated soft tissue foreign body removal and digital blocks with toenail removal.
Competent in the proper application of derma bond (skin glue) as well as steri-strips and surgical absorbable hemostat.
Understanding of different dressings needed to protect and cover wounds such as bums and ulcers and providing instructions on home treatment to patients. Removal of skin staples and sutures as ordered.
Independently apply full range of orthopedic equipment as ordered including splinting of extremities using Ortho-Glass to form specialized splints of extremities.
Skilled at proper application of a full range of supportive orthopedic equipment such as Velcro Splints and Cam-walkers, knee immobilizers and hard sole shoes.
Instruct and advise patients on the use and care of splints, crutch walking and appropriate activities.
Answer telephone for providers and direct inquiries appropriately.
Promptly and accurately documents patient assessments, treatments, medications, vital signs and health teachings in Electronic Medical Record.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting patient assessments; preparing patients for exams or procedures; providing emergency medical interventions or care; and documenting information in patient medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
