The Assistant Chief of Dental Service has responsibility for participating in and/or managing all aspects of the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) dental program, to include, clinical, administrative, academic and research components. The Assistant Chief will serve as acting Chief in the absence of the Chief of the Dental Service.

The Assistant Chief will work in conjunction with the Chief of the Dental Service to coordinate resident academic activities with the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) School of Dentistry. The Assistant Chief will also assure that the Dental Service meets national (Joint Commission) accreditation standards.
Functions/Duties include, but are not limited to:
Deliver care to the Veteran requiring dentistry.
Devise, implement, communicate, and monitor a comprehensive triage system for dental issues.
Work with multiple Divisions/Services throughout the facility to improve outcomes and efficiencies.
Collaborates on frequent basis with Operative Care Division Executive Board members to facilitate the operations of the Division.
Responsible for the structure and details of dentist's schedules and nighttime coverage systems relevant to the care of the dental patient.
Performs the administrative components of patient care management.
Participates in Joint Commission activities and any other relevant activities.
Participates in quality improvement activities.
Meets continuing education requirements.
Establishes and promotes an atmosphere of unity through collaborative practice and effective communication between all staff disciplines. Fosters a high level of patient and staff satisfaction.
Supervises and trains dental hygienists, dental assistant trainees, laboratory trainees, residents, and dental student trainees.
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Qualifications
Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Grade Determinations: The grade to which an applicant is appointed will be determined by the individual's qualifications and assignment. Under the Title 38 "rank-in-person" system, candidates are to be appointed at the highest grade or level within the grade for which they are fully qualified up to the full performance level. For positions above the full performance (journey level) the complexity of the assignment and scope of responsibility are considered in determining grades.

Additional Requirement: Supervisory experience, administrative experience in a large (>25 Staff), hospital dentistry experience, >5 years in dentistry. Dental leadership and skill knowledge.
