About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas.
A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Duties
Perform duties requiring use of all-purpose industrial single needle sewing machine, button machine, over edge machine, heat and seal machine, and fabric cutter machine.
Repair articles such as: cubicle curtains, drapes, blankets, pajamas, robes, gowns, surgical wraps, sheets, laundry bags and other items.
Exercise precision on items that present problems because of their complex construction, weight and size.
Perform complicated tacking operations on hospital garments, i.e., measure, fit and mark garments for alterations such as hemming or adjusting waist lines or sleeve lengths.
Utilize a thumb drive to transfer names to embroidery machine and prints names of doctors, physician assistants, and curtain sizes inventory on the computer.
Determine dimensions of parts from other patterns so that replacement parts will match the print or weave of the article.
Receive soiled hospital duty whites daily from hospital personnel, and receive clean hospital duty whites daily from the commercial laundry.
Maintain the inventory of duty whites, doctor/PA coats and all hospital linens.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Sewing Machine Operator without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the common duties of a Sewing Machine Operator. I can operate a sewing machine with all-purpose attachments. I can set the stitches and tension on the various machines according to the material being used and type of work being done. I can alter the length of sleeves and legs, hems, waist, or chest without changing the basic shape of the article. I can cut parts to exact dimensions, and trim and shape edges. I am skilled in various measuring tapes, hem markers, ripping tools, yardsticks, snap hand tools, scissors, pinking shears and other similar type small hand tools. I can patch, darn, reinforce weak spots, tears, holes, worn areas, frayed sections and open seams. I can operate a heat and seal machine and an embroidery machine. I can perform operator maintenance. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Requires standing for long periods of time at work tables, to measure, mark and cut materials. Requires sitting for long periods of time when operating the sewing machines or button machines. Requires standing or sitting for long periods of time when operating the heat and seal machine. Requires stooping, bending, kneeling and continually using arms, hands and fingers in pulling and positioning materials, sewing and using other tools. Requires lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds. Requires pushing or pulling carts.
Working Conditions: Works in area that is adequately lighted, ventilated, heated, and cooled. Subject to cuts, bruises, punctures, scratches, burns and other minor injuries. Dust and lint from fabrics, fumes and odorous glue and preservatives. Exposed to contaminated linen materials. Uses protective devices such as safety glasses, gloves, for example. May occasionally work weekends.
