Duties
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing office support services for specialists in a variety of functional areas such as budget, purchasing, supply, and property management in the Administrative Division and legal assistance services for Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) assigned to the Criminal or Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Northern District of New York. If selected, you will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed. Typical work assignments will include:
maintaining automated records for civil/criminal cases using a computerized case tracking and record-keeping system;
reviewing reports to identify recurring errors;
training new employees in the operation and use of a case tracking system;
maintaining and extracting data from automated databases;
determining incoming cases or legal actions requiring special handling;
purchasing supplies using a purchase card ordering system;
retiring property in a property management system;
serving as a timekeeper for the district;
serving as a receptionist by receiving telephone calls and visitors to the office; and
responding to inquiries and providing general information regarding office programs.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progresses.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications
To be qualified at the GS-05 level, you must have: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to work at the GS-04 level in Federal service, which has equipped you with the competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector; OR four years of education above the high school level or a Bachelor's or higher degree; OR a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below.
Specialized Experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: inputting information into a computerized case-tracking system; answering telephones; performing receptionist duties; maintaining files; routing in-coming mail; and responding to telephone inquiries.
Combining Specialized Experience and Education: Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-04 grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
To be qualified at the GS-06 level, you must have: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to work at the GS-05 level in Federal service, which has equipped you with the competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: using a computerized case tracking system to produce reports; performing timekeeping functions; performing receptionist duties; monitoring and accounting for assets; and maintaining a supply room.
To be qualified at the GS-07 level, you must have: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to work at the GS-06 level in Federal service, which has equipped you with the competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: using a computerized case tracking system to produce reports and training others; performing timekeeping duties including advising other timekeepers; performing receptionist duties; monitoring and accounting for assets and recommending a course of action on issues; and maintaining and ordering supplies.
Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP): The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
