The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the senior engineering technical consultant and advisor in electronics and data recording systems within the Mishap Analysis and Animation Facility (MAAF) in support of aircraft safety and accident investigations. Work performed in this position supports Air Staff-level functions of the Air Force Chief of Safety. See DUTIES section for Summary

Duties

SUMMARY: This is a developmental position with known promotion potential to the target position of 8YAR90936, Electronics Engineer, GS-0855(24)-13. Incumbent works closely with the supervisor in performing duties identified in the full performance standard core personnel document/core document. DUTIES: Serves as the subject matter expert in aircraft avionics, controls, recording, retrieval, analysis, and animation systems for the MAAF. Supports the development, acquisition, sustainment, and operation of aircraft data recording systems as well as MAAF retrieval, analysis, and animation systems. Advises the Air Force Chief of Safety and represents the organization. Maintains and supplements Air Force aircraft data recovery and analysis capabilities and expertise to preserve credibility.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, Electronics Engineering Series 0855 BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. Extensive knowledge of advanced concepts, principles, practices, methods, and techniques to provide expert judgment concerning programs/operations; resolve unique or novel problems, conditions, or issues; and significantly alter standard practices, processes, and known techniques. Expert knowledge of the software design cycle, associated documentation requirements, and subsequent software modification testing and evaluation processes involved in producing and accepting a product, including knowledge of software configuration management, software testing/evaluation/verification/validation, and software documentation involved in accomplishing significant engineering projects which represent an important segment of the agency's operating program.
