This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Hawaii has many outdoor activities all year round including surfing, paddling, diving, fishing, and hiking.
Duties
You will serve as the work leader providing instructions to workers received from the supervisor and starts work (assigning tasks to be performed).
Lead workers in the planning, maintenance, installation, and repair of various types of air conditioning equipment, refrigeration systems, ventilation equipment, and air compressor units.
Work along with other workers, setting the pace, using proper work methods and procedures. Answer questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
Monitor work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisors instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.
Keep supervisor appraised on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.
Perform maintenance on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a candidate to possess and maintain a universal CFC certification as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
- This position may require the incumbent to respond to emergency calls after regular working hours.
- This position requires the incumbent to assure that environmental, safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
- This position requires passing a pre-employment physical and annually thereafter.
- This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a driver's license in one of the 50 US states or possessions and any installation and/or DoD requirement.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader ~ without more than normal supervision; setting work priorities, demonstrating proper work and safety procedures, install new split and package HVAC systems; diagnose and repair of electrical problems, replacing compressors, condenser fans, blower wheels, bearings and other HVAC system components; use plans and blueprints to locate and repair HVAC system mechanical, electric/electronic components. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The mechanic frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weight up to 50 pounds. Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of the system worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places, therefore, requiring extended periods of stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is frequently dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold storage rooms; employee is subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock. The employee is exposed to possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Uncomfortable facemasks and protective clothing must be worn when exposed to toxic refrigerant.
