This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Hawaii is a beautiful state, but has a high cost of living. Hawaii has many outdoor activities all year round including surfing, paddling, diving, fishing, and hiking.
Duties
You will install, repair, overhaul, and perform maintenance on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems.
You will diagnose and locate malfunctions, disassemble, repair, replace and/or adjust thermostats, pressure stats, humistats, relays, switches, and other automatic control devices.
You will troubleshoot, maintain and repair ventilation equipment.
You will assist in starting, stopping, logging, etc., of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
You will perform preventive maintenance and operational checks on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, following an established schedule.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and keep current a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DoD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
- Responds to emergency calls after regular working hours.
- Universal CFC certification is required. In accordance with section 608 CAA 1990, incumbent must be certified as a universal technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F within 1 year of hire.
- Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment and annual physical examination.
- Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
- This position requires temporary duty travel (TDY) of 10%.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision; performing common preventive maintenance tasks such as recognizing causes of faulty equipment; assisting with the repair of a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units/systems; tightening connections, making splices, insulating exposed wires, AND cleaning and lubricating moving parts. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort - Work involves strenuous, heavy physical effort in constantly reaching, bending and turning. Equipment worked on is large and must be moved in and out of specific locations. Frequently sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 75 pounds and occasionally heavier. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units. Ladders, scaffolds, and platforms may be used when working on large systems or roofs.
Working Conditions - Work is performed inside and outside, in all types of weather. Subject to sudden temperature changes and extreme cold during repair of large walk-in refrigerators and in mechanical rooms having extreme temperatures. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders and scaffolds. Exposed to possibility of injury from electrical current. Exposed to cleaning chemicals. Protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes are required. Steel toe shoes, hard hats and safety glasses, are required at all times. Long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves are worn.
