Do you have architecture experience related to facilities construction, renovation, and design? The Space and Design Branch (SDB) has an Architect position available in the Office of Intramural Management, Division of Intramural Research.
Duties
Lead site investigations and evaluate data to determine feasibility, topography, and site configuration; or condition of structure and essential data prior to initiating design.
Monitor and assess effectiveness of contractors in meeting contractual requirements.
Perform planning and design work for substantial multi-phase new construction, renovation, and improvement projects for a variety or real property facilities.
Conduct site investigations and evaluate data to determine feasibility, topography, and site configuration; or condition of structure and essential data prior to initiating design.
Confer with customers regarding design and/or project requirements, needs, building limitations and functional use of space to determine the most economical solution to satisfy operational needs.
Investigate project sites to determine the condition of a facility or property prior to initiating design and evaluate and translate this data into working drawings and specifications.
Direct the preparation of detailed fee estimates.
Ensure federal, state, and local codes concerning health, safety, and the environment are strictly adhered to in the programming, design, and construction of real property facilities.
Requirements

Qualifications
In order to qualify for an Architect GS-0808 position, you must have:
A. a degree with a major in architecture; OR
B. a degree in a related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems; OR
C. a combination of education and experience-college-level education, training, and/or technical experience as demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) Related Curriculum: A degree in architectural engineering with course work covering function, esthetics, site, structure, economics, mechanical-electrical, and other engineering problems related to the design and construction of buildings primarily (but not exclusively) intended to house human activities OR; (2) Experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required.
In addition to the basic requirement, in order to qualify for an Architect, GS-0808 position at the GS-11 level, you must:
A. possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, OR a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, in architecture; OR
B. be registered to practice architecture by one of the state registration boards, using standards in compliance with the basic minimum provisions recommended by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards; OR
C. have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: carrying out projects with low construction costs, small size, and standardized architectural elements; producing a variety of architectural design studies such as graphic analysis charts, diagrammatic sketches, and schematic outlines; using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs and project tracking programs; and ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental rules and procedures.
D. I qualify for this position at the GS-11 level because I have a combination of post graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
In addition to the basic requirement, in order to qualify for an Architect, GS-0808 position at the GS-12 level, you must you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: evaluating design and construction objectives and identifying the most economical and efficient procedures for building renovation, design and construction; investigating project sites to determine the condition of a facility or property prior to initiating design and evaluating and translating this data into working drawings and specifications; preparing detailed fee estimates used for negotiating and estimating projects with construction support as well as architect-engineering firms for design services; using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs and project tracking programs; making final inspections, checking in detail all phases of contract compliance with specifications and drawings, and verifies quality and acceptability of work.
In addition to the basic requirement, in order to qualify for an Architect, GS-0808 position at the GS-13 level, you must you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning architectural projects for multi-phase new construction, renovation, and improvement projects; conducting site investigations to determine feasibility, topography, and site configuration; participating in review of bids, contractors' proposals, contract specifications and designs, as well as in contract negotiations; using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs and project tracking programs; resolving problems or conflicts impeding progress, and assuring that contractors and organizational staffs work effectively toward timely completion of projects.
