About the Position: US Military Entrance Processing Command, North Chicago, IL, is a jointly staffed command under direction of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy and is staffed by representatives of all branches of the Armed Forces. The command, through its 66 Military Entrance Processing Stations, determines whether applicants are qualified for enlistment based on standards set by each of the services.
This is a TERM appointment.
Duties
As a Data Scientist, you will:
Advise, coach, consult, with less senior analysts, and for performing professional and scientific work in mathematics, statistical analysis, project planning, and/or other scientific principles, methods, and techniques.
Execute data science projects, to include setting project goals, exploring available data, wrangling data assessing current (or available), and gapped data, developing a project plan, analyzing (statistical models/models), engineering possible
solutions (e.g., creating dashboards or a graphical user interface (GUI), also including programming), optimizing (using supplementary software to optimize the results or product), executing data science methodologies, delivering project results
(reports, briefings, white papers), revise (project requirements require some potential revisions), and wrapping up (the project in the best most accessible (understandable – communicating results to the customer).
Support the creation of data models, assessments of the data architecture of the organization, and plans to address data architecture shortfalls.
Create data models and continually assess the data architecture of the organization.
Analyze data functions including application development of analytics, measures/metrics to foster performance towards service targets, objectives, goals to influence operational planning, reporting, decision making, business intelligence tools.
Apply data-mining techniques in practical real-world business issues to consider data, identify patterns, issues, or data analysis needs of the organization.
Evaluate command policies, data structures, business and technology architectures, and business processes to document opportunities, ways, means, and requirements for infusing emerging technologies into current business processes and capabilities.
Utilize artificial intelligence to perform tasks to enhance and/or improve decision-making.
Produce analytical reports and communicates the technical data requirements to data providers.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has been designated as non-critical sensitive as defined in DoD 5200.2-R, and requires you to possess, or obtain and maintain, for the duration of employment, a Secret security clearance.
Qualifications
**Telework eligible position - Position has an official duty location of North Chicago, IL and is eligible for Situational Telework at the discretion of the Command. This position is NOT eligible for remote work (remote duty location). If telework is approved, selectees will be required to report to their official duty location as outlined in their telework agreement.**
TERM APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:
This position is TERM not to exceed 366 days with provisions to extend up to a maximum of eight years. Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a term appointment will be appointed/converted into a term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position. This position will not be made permanent.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and education requirements described below. Basic Requirements:
A. Bachelor's Degree or higher: in Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or a field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.
And
Specialized experience: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, including: Applying complex analytical, linear algebra, calculus, and statistical theories to include regressions, and forecasting methodologies sufficient to conduct a variety of research studies to obtain, develop, synthesize, and present facts and information on program operations and systems; Analyzing data using probability statistics and trend analysis; Foreseeing the impact of changing technology on current procedures and operations and resolving issues or problems; Utilizing cloud analytics to create data models and continually assess the data architecture of the organization. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
