This position serves as a virtual Clinical Pharmacy Technician for the VHA National EHRM Supplemental Staffing Unit
(NESSU). Pharmacy technicians at this grade level are nationally certified by PTCB or ExCPT and can work
autonomously, using independent judgement to perform duties.
Preferred Experience:
Preferred experience in Oracle-Center, working in a National Supplemental Staffing Unit. Clinical Resource Hub, or Clinical Contact Center and covering multiple sites crossing numbers EHR's.
Duties
TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
a. The Clinical Pharmacy Technician serves as a liaison between veterans, veterans' care givers, pharmacy staff ,
and providers.
b. Processes refills, tracks and provides the status of filling and delivery of prescriptions processed at Consolidated
Mail-Out Pharmacy (CMOP) or site pharmacy.
c. Triages a variety of patient requests within the Federal EHR and via the MyHealtheVet platform.
d. Requests refill/renewal of prescriptions in Cerner and CPRS. Documents all correspondence with providers and
patients in patient record system.
e. Provides the veteran with information concerning medication fills, future fills, and status of their prescription.
f. Communicates with others to help veterans update mailing or permanent addresses.
g. Reports medication close calls/errors through appropriate channels.
h. Triages questions requiring professional judgment appropriately to a pharmacist, clinical provider, and/or triage
registered nurse. Refers patients to providers or appropriate person for extension of prescriptions or proposals,
as determined by SOP.
i. Educates the veteran on proper usage of the automated phone service.
j. Assists with the detection of problems with the automated ref ill system and reports accordingly.
k. Provide staff with needed information, telephone call information, and take messages as appropriate.
l. Works with Clinical Contact and/or Call Center telephone triage and site pharmacy to improve customer service.
m. Documents clinical and operational issues as assigned.
n. Performs all duties of medication management system responsibilities of a pharmacy technician at the same or
lower grade.
o. Completes additional duties as assigned.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Care in the Community (CITC)
a. The pharmacy technician is responsible for prescription order entry with pharmacist verification, laboratory value
monitoring, medical chart/action profile poly-pharmacy reviews, drug utilization evaluation monitoring, telephone
logistical support, supplemental patient education communication, and medication reconciliation with pharmacist
oversight.
b. Reviews Community Care authorizations to determine eligibility for electronically sent prescriptions.
c. Utilizes pharmacy information systems to identify allergies and basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate
therapy with drugs in the same drug class and alerts the provider/pharmacist to the possible need for clinical
intervention.
d. The pharmacy technician may contact non-VA providers, medical facilities, and Care in the Community Office to
facilitate proper adjudication of prescriptions received f rom non-VA providers/clinics.
Population Health Management
a. Completes assigned clinical activities and operates within the approved scope of practice and clinical pharmacy
protocols or procedures under the direction of a Clinical Pharmacist/Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner (CPP).
b. Independently gathers, evaluates, and analyzes data of patients as per established protocols. All clinical
decision making will made conjointly with the NESSU CPP.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Participates in the training and in-servicing of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents,
pharmacy students, and other personnel as required.
b. Serves as an Subject Matter Expert for the NESSU Peer Support Program and provides on goining and
continuous peer support to NESSU and facility end-users. Peer Support includes a variety of modalities to
enhance the learning of clinical peers to increase the adoption timeline related to the EHR. Such modalities
include presentation, demonstrations, answering real-time questions from end-users, email communications, or
video calls. Peer support is primarily through virtual communications, but some in-person peer support at a
facility may be required based on the needs of the facility and the availability of NESSU staff .
c. Collaborates and shares information with team for overall team improvement
d. Completes administrative projects and reports in a timely manner
e. Adheres to and ensures the pharmacy program is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body
requirements, as well as related policies and procedures

Qualifications
Area of Consideration: This position is only open to all VHA and VISN current employees. Applicants must submit an SF-50 with application.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a).
Education or Experience:
(1) None required.
(2) For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification.
Grade Qualifications GS-8:
Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and demonstrate the KSAs below.
Certification: The employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
(a) PTCB as a CPhT.
OR
(b) NHA as a ExCPT.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments.
Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section.
Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
